acoa poems

These are just some feelings put on paper a few years back. It has always been easier to do this than talk to anyone in my family, about any thing in my life.

~And Morning Will Come~

The hour is late
as the children wait
each in their bed
filled with dread
the shouting begins
and a scream is heard
they sink lower
into their blankets
and don't say a word
one child leaves her bed
to climb in with another
they cover their ears
but can't stop the tears
the shouting is louder
as she runs down the hall
the neighbors must hear
maybe someone will call
but now it's all quiet
and morning will come
they'll all sit at breakfast
and their mother will say
"the coffee is ready,
would you like some?"
their father will answer
but the children stay numb

~The Elephant

An elephant stood
in the middle of the room
a whole family lived
with the elephant
but to speak of it
was certain doom
the little girl saw it there
and wanted to scream
"i can't be the only one to see!
there's no way this can be"
but no one else would acknowledge
the beast
so every day the same as before
everyone learned
the rule to ignore
as years passed
the elephant grew
to such a hugh size
it was hard to ignore
but everyone did
and if you almost gave in
you would run to your room
and slam the door
finally everyone but two
had gone away
and as the little girl
all grown up
moved out that day
the elephant was still standing there
looking at her
with such a glare
as her parents waved goodbye
and turned to go inside
she wanted to scream
"look at it!! don't you see it there!?"
but she didn't
she didn't say a word
and only years later
she finally heard
about the elephant
that lived with her family
when her brother told her
"You weren't the only one to see" ~

I've been saying for years now that I want to get a huge white elephant sculpture and stick it in our living room so when people comment on it I can say either, "Elephant? What elephant?!? You must be seeing things..." or "Shhh!!! [whisper] We don't talk about that...".

Powerful sharings sloane, especially for someone who came from one of our "don't talk, don't trust, don't feel" alcoholic families... Keep posting! Glad you're here!!!

Peace...

Here's my all time fav. Many years ago it inspired a few friends and I to start our own 12 step program for adult survivors of childhood torture and incest.

HELL IS FOR CHILDREN
by Pat Benatar

They cry in the dark, so you can’t see their tears
They hide in the light, so you can’t see their fears
Forgive and forget, all the while
Love and pain become one and the same
In the eyes of a wounded child
Because hell
Hell is for children
And you know that their little lives can become such a mess
Hell
Hell is for children
And you shouldn’t have to pay for your love with your bones and your flesh

It’s all so confusing, this brutal abusing
They blacken your eyes, and then apologize
You’re daddy’s good girl, and don’t tell mommy a thing
Be a good little boy, and you’ll get a new toy
Tell grandma you fell off the swing

Because hell
Hell is for children
And you know that their little lives can become such a mess
Hell
Hell is for children
And you shouldn’t have to pay for your love with your bones and your flesh

No, hell is for children

nocellphone, what a great idea

to have an elephant in the middle of the room!!
I have a good friend that has a stuffed elephant and his name is "Truth." She holds on tight to that elephant, and has been known to take him to family gatherings
