A good place for the weekend, Weekenders 12-15 January 2024

Where’s this good place this weekend?

What do we need to make a place we’re comfortable with?

I once thought it was in a bottle. Everything was wonderful with a bottle. Until it wasn’t and then there didn’t seem enough bottles to make it wonderful anymore.

Being sober, I realise a wonderful place starts with me, inside me.

I read this post on SR from Ann a few years ago.

It was about our mind and where we chose to be. I could relate to it.

‘In my mind are many dwellings. Each of the dwellings we create ourselves – the house of anger, the house of despair, the house of self pity, the house of indifference, the house of negative, the house of positive, the house of hope, the house of joy, the house of peace, the house of enthusiasm, the house of cooperation, the house of giving.

Each of these houses we visit each day. We can stay in any house for as long as we want. We can leave these mental houses any time we wish.

We create the dwelling, we stay in the dwelling, we leave the dwelling whenever we wish. We can create new rooms, new houses. Whenever we enter these dwellings, this becomes our world until we leave for another. What world will we live in today?’

How about a good place for the weekend?

If this is your first weekend sober, or many, come join us for support and chat...as we know the weekends can be a struggle sometimes. (We’re here all week too!)

I'm in sober for the weekend in my house brain. Booze took me, by it's effect, to anywhere but the real world, my world, my house. Instant gratification...by the end to get as quickly to oblivion, so horrible (or so I perceived it) was my world, I just wanted to escape it. On drinking over a gallon of rotgut wine a day, I was dancing with fate- whether I lived or died.
Life is hard work at times, but it is real , it is mine and I have more control in what I do. And don't do- like drinking alcohol. My brain house is often the looking back/memories/shame/guilt house. BUT I am slowly working on my stuff.
Thanks Mags, you done good.

I'm looking out from a shack by the sea. There's a big swell, and I like it. 🌊

Thanks, Mags. I'm in for a sober weekend!

Thoughts are the things that make up my life. I'll be at Steely's place!

I bookmarked this one on a site I visit every day.

Thought for the Day

Tuesday 9 January

We are what our thoughts have made us; so take care about what you think. Words are secondary. Thoughts live; they travel far.

— Swami Vivekananda

Eknath Easwaran's Commentary

The ancestor of every destructive action, every destructive decision, is a negative thought. We do not have to be afraid of negative thoughts as long as we do not welcome them. They are in the air, and they may knock at anyone’s door; but if we do not embrace them, ask them in, and make them our own, they can have no power over us.

We can think of thoughts as hitchhikers. At the entrance to the freeway, we used to see a lot of hitchhikers carrying signs: “Vancouver,” “Mexico,” “L.A.” One said in simple desperation, “Anywhere!” Thoughts are a lot like those hitchhikers. We can pick them up or pass them by. Negative thoughts carry signs, but usually we see only one side, the side with all the promises. The back of the sign tells us their true destination: sickness and sorrow.

Nobody is obliged to pick up these passengers. If we do not stop and let them in, they cannot go anywhere, because they are not real until we support them. There is sympathy in the world: pick it up. There is antipathy in the world: don’t pick it up. Hatred destroys. Love heals.

The Thought for the Day is today's entry from Eknath Easwaran's Words to Live By.

Hi Runner congratulations on day 465

Hi Alpine

Hi Bim thanks for sharing the thought for today. Very interesting about thoughts being like hitchhikers. We can leave them be but if we pick them up they invade our space and mind.

Good to see you all in for a sober weekend!

I’m in!! Thanks for the OP Mags 💕. Congrats on shotgun Reid!! 🥳

Yesterday I got copies of all my medical records with all the notes made by the Dr’s. I won’t bore you with the details but some of the comments were absolutely disgusting and outrageous. I made a complaint. This has really triggered me and the AV rose up full of glee trying to fool me. Currently fighting the urge and doing the right things I know work. And that includes keeping on posting here.

Hope everyone is having a good day!

Much love and hugs
Manta xx

Hi Mags, Dee, DD, Steely, Least, Manta, Alpine and Bimini!
Steely that visual sounds so cool!
Well, they’re still calling for snow! So my husband and I will pack up and leave for the hotel. He hast to work this weekend and needs to be within walking distance to the hospital. Well, not walking distance, but he needs to be able to make it to the hospital for his shifts. They don’t plow where we live so the roads are treacherous.
Although this will be sort of expensive, I’m kind of excited to take a vacation. We haven’t been away in over three years. Even if it’s just 20 minutes away!
So excited for snow!!
Def in for a sober weekend.

Mags-
“Peke, it’s a good investment for a healthy hobby you enjoy. Look at the dollars you’ll save not drinking. Great to invest it into your hobby!”
Thanks for this 👆 comment.
