Hi
I'm Jules, and for all of my life my dad has been an alcoholic, as well as being addicted to prescription drugs. His drunken stupor and rage as well as his absence due to his addiction has affected me greatly in nearly every aspect of my life. I come from a long line of addicts on my father's side. Father, his father, his grandfather on his dad's side, his grandfather on his mom's side, his uncle, his cousins. Nearly everyone on my dad's side of the family has had an unhealthy addiction. I'm here to break generational curses. I got drunk recently, and it messed with my medicine, playing a part in a large manic episode, and now all I can see when I think of that moment is my father. Something he would've done. Alcohol is a demon that has destroyed my family and life time and time again, and I can't be the one to keep the curse going. I hope somebody here relates, and gives me some advice, or even just a story similar to mine. Thank you.

Welcome to SR, familyjules.

There is an abundance of alcoholism in my family, too. Take heart, it is very possible to break the cycle and lead a fulfilling sober life. My sister and I are now both sober and enjoying life in recovery.

You have found a great place for support. Familiarize yourself with the sites there is the forum which you have found for Adult Children for Alcoholics; a forum for Newcomers to Sobriety among others - maybe join a Class where you can interact with members who are also new to sobriety and with whom you can share your experiences.

Very glad you are here, familyjules.

Hi and welcome FamilyJules

I have alcoholism on one side of my family as well - not my parents in my case but uncles/aunts, grandparents...every bit as destructive to my family and to me.

I knew the familial history and so didn't actually start drinking in earnest until I was 25 but I soon made up for that

The main point is - genetics can be beaten
I stopped drinking I have become the person I wanted to be.

If I can do it, you can too - you really can break that chain

I'm really glad you found us
