One year

Last year on Christmas I was incomprehensibly demoralized, depressed, anxious, and totally preoccupied with where I could get my next drink and whether it would give me the relief I thought I needed. I found that next drink that evening, a bottle of wine which I chugged the moment I had the opportunity. It didn't do much. It was also my last drink.

This year, again on Christmas, I was...peaceful and content. Yesterday, on my anniversary, I went to a meeting and listened - really listened - to the promises, and it occurred to me that they have begun coming true - all of them.

So for me, Christmas is, in part, a time of remembrance - remembering the ugliness, remembering who I was, so I don't ever go back to it. And my anniversary is a day of gratefulness - gratefulness for who I have become and what has got me here - so I don't ever let go of it.

For anyone just starting off...hang in there. You can have a life beyond what you believed was possible. One year, twenty years, one day - we are all in the same boat, because all anyone really has is today.

Good post I really appreciate it!! I am looking forward to my SIX month chip in a little over a month. And congrats on the YEAR keep going.. I love these posts because it gives me hope that it gets easier as the days pass.

Many congrats! I remember your post about alcohol gradually taking more and more than it gave, when the time came to face facts. To surrender, basically. Kudos to you.
