Why I stopped drinking
I came across this list today and thought it was spot on:
I stopped drinking:
I stopped drinking:
- because when I did drink, I wished I didn't. I got tired of wishing.
- because my relationship with alcohol stopped working for me. We're better off apart (wink).
- because every system in my body works better now. If you insist, I'll give you head-to-toe detail!
- because I love a great night's sleep more than a martini.
- because I prefer my limited sugar calories in ice cream.
- because I'm aging as fast as a want to. I don't need an accelerent.
- because I've reached my lifetime limit.
- because I've already done that and it's always the same. I'm trying something different now.
- because I'm contrary and everybody expects me to drink. So I don't.
- because it's like the gym - I've never regretted going to the gym and I've never regretted abstaining from alcohol.
- because I'm driving. (and when some fool says "one won't hurt", I say, "neither will none.")
- because I like my inhibitions.
- because I'm limiting my carcinogens and I love bacon more than bourbon."
Some good replies in that list. I usually say something along the lines of "it just wasn't working out for me."
What is behind that sort of glib statement is that my life was losing its meaning and that scared the part of me that still cared. Things were truly becoming unmanageable and the only way to get back to any sort of sanity was to quit. Most people don't need/want to hear all that, but if they really want to know, I'll tell them.
