Elevated liver enzymes and worried

Hi everyone,

i recently quit drinking (again) and got some blood work done to see the damage. My liver enzymes are about 9-10 times what they should be and they want me to get an ultrasound of the upper right quadrant of my liver.

Can anyone who’s had this scare and give me some advice or encouragement? Maybe things you did at home to help lower the enzymes. It would help so much because I’m panicking!

well, not drinking at all EVER is number one.
unfortunately, this isn't a test you can cram for, or try to have a better outcome by trying a few things at home. you need need an honest evaluation. your physician is your first and best source of information regarding your liver and liver health.

Its normal with high alcohol consumption.

I had similar readings.

Stayed off the booze and it fixed itself with no special help.

Drink plenty of water wouldn't hurt.

You are doing the right thing by not drinking.

Hopefully you can talk to your doctor after the test is done and get a better idea of what is happening.

I am in the same situation. My liver enzymes were through the roof. That was one of thr catalysts to quit. I quit 15 days ago. The liver can heal itself but will take time. 4-6 weeks. Drink lots of water and eat healthy lots of vegetables..
dont panick. Its a sign to quit.

No medical advice, but I can give you recovery advice if you are open to it.

Worry less about your liver and more about your drinking and how you are going to get sober. You've had four posts since joining in April. If you are seeking support from Sober Recovery, read and post daily, if not multiple times a day. And if SR isn't enough, seek out and participate in a formal alcohol abuse program.

I have elevated liver enzymes as well. Currently 4x the upper level. I had them checked at 2 months sober and they hadn’t gone down. My next check is in 4 months and I’m hoping they go down then.

My plan is to continue with sobriety and take it from there.

Good of luck to you!

Mine went down within a few weeks of quitting. Have been normal since (even after a few relapses)

At this point the only thing you can do is not drink. You can't make things worse if you don't drink. doggonecarl's advice about being more active on the boards is sound. Since joining I've tried to read the boards every day, so now I have over 80 days of sobriety under my belt purely from using SR.

Things will definitely improve if you avoid drinking!

Thank you everyone, I feel a bit better. I’m going to try a liver friendly diet and definitely nooo alcohol. I knew it would be bad news but not that bad. I went directly to AA and am listening to recovery elevator podcasts. Trying to stay positive!

Well, you're taking steps in the right direction.
My liver enzymes were elevated, too. After nine and a half years sober, they're still elevated. Doctors don't know why.
If that is any condolence.
Yep, don't drink. Friends of mine have drank themselves to death by not quitting after getting the news. One actually turned green. Sad. But, that's one of the outcomes for those of us don't stop drinking.

I hope you don't panic Britth, but now is the time to turn this around. Health is wealth after all.

I did more damage when I drank and took Tylenol for years (didn't know it exacerbated the liver's stress when combined with alcohol, a big no-no). When my appendix went out on me six years ago, they did the ultrasound and discovered at the same time my appendix had ruptured, but that my liver was pocked with small hematomas and I was referred to a specialist to rule out liver cancer. Fortunately my enzymes were within normal range but I now get monitored annually from here on for the rest of my life.

I have been eating better, staying off the booze, staying away from fried foods and processed meats like sausage, bacon, lunch meat, etc.(which is hard for your liver to process). And of course, I no longer take Tylenol. Be good to yourself and quit.

There are many ways of finding a better life without alcohol, this website is full of good information and inspiration. Just take this as a wake up call, a true gift with the chance to change. Good luck to you and sending you positive thoughts for your good health.

I had elevated enzymes after a 10 day binge.

I then had a blood test done 3 months later and they were completely back to normal.

I got lucky I decided to quit alcohol before any real damage was done.
