Physical, mental, emotional rest is an
important part in recovery to exercise
on a daily bases in life and recovery in
order to achieve a healthy, happy mind
body and soul.
Plug in some soothing, inspirational
music if needed to block out unwanted
noises and thoughts that keep us restless,
irritable or discontent.

Well, medical science tells us our body needs periods of sleep and rest to repair itself, to heal, to generate new cells, to de-toxify, and to keep up our immunity.
Sometimes I think people confuse resting with laziness. Maybe because we've all known a truly lazy person with very little ambition or drive who justified their sloth with "I'm tired. I need to rest." Until very recently, I enjoyed resting, but I always felt a little guilt about it, like I was being "lazy." Not anymore. That's a benefit of sobriety. Being able to say "I need a nap" because I'm sleepy or tired, not because I'm hungover. I can actually even identify hunger better now and whether I'm really hungry or is it habit or munchies. Being rested brings clarity to your head also.

One of my favorite topics....and by far the most challenging issue I have in recovery. I am two and a half years sober and my sleep challenges and patterns have been such a convoluted process.
I know I slept a ton when I first quit drinking and I still take a nap several days a week. Getting on a work schedule that is more in tune with my body (id rather be up and going early and in bed early) is a recent change for the better. I do have to remember it will seem a little dramatic to send work emails at 4am though...
I find that hydration ties into my rest and my energy level too. Exercise is the other big component to expending enough energy so I can rest.
Self care is an ongoing learning process for me!

Interesting thread. I think learning how to rest both body and mind is really important. I’m not good at it. Getting good rest when your body is free of the physical and emotional effects of alcohol is a wonderful thing.
For me it was building a mentally healthy balanced life. All elements in balance. Rest being one of them.
My obsessive nature means I will tend to focus on just one area and really over do it. I no longer want to act that way.

Bump. Great reminders for me today.
Signs all around me that I need to rest and let my mind and body have extra healing time today.
God, please give me eyes to see this,
a heart open to guidance, healing and growth
and ears to hear good, healthy direction.
