When to pick up a monthly chip

Hello all, I am wondering if you can help me with a minor conundrum. I just started counting days 60 days ago tomorrow, and my official sobriety date is the 9th. Does one usually pick up their chip on the day count or on the monthly date? Is it open to interpretation?

Additionally, can one pick up their monthly chip in the days after their sobriety date?

My birthday is on Sunday and I don't think I'll be anywhere near a meeting but I'd like to collect my 2 month chip...

Your sobriety date is considered your "birthday" so in each Feb 21 is when I get a chip now that I have gotten two year chips. Before a year, you would get one on the day you hit 90 or 6 months or whatever. Usually I make a point to go to a meeting on that day. Sometimes I've gone a day or two after but not before. It's fine to get it close to the actual day!

Good going!

Hi Plenny I've seen people pick up their chip a few weeks or months late actually. It all depends on what you think is right and if you can't go on that day then it's absolutely fine to go a bit later. In the city where I live there are only 2 occasions per week to pick up your chip anyway. At all the other meetings, they don't hand them out. So it's rare people go on their actual date.

For the the chips that celebrate how many days you've been sober you go by days. So if you have reached 60 days on the 7th but your sobriety date is on the 9th you can pick up your chip on the 7th (same for 30 and 90 days). From 6 months on you go by the day of the month you got sober, so you will pick up your 6 month chip on January 9th.

Where I live they give out chips the following way:

White chip: just starting out or coming back from a relapse
30 day chip : 30 continuous days of sobriety
60 day chip: 60 continuous days of sobriety (not all groups give out 60 day chips)
90 day chip: 90 continuous days of sobriety
6 month chip: 6 months of continuous sobriety
9 month chip: 9 months of continuous sobriety (not all groups give out 9 month chips)
1 year chip: 1 year of continuous sobriety
18 month chip: 18 months of continuous sobriety (have only seen a few groups give out 18 month chips)

NOTE: I live in the south. Different regions tend to have their own customs on when they give out chips. If they call it a "2 month chip" I would wait until the 9th to pick it up. If they call it a 60 day chip I would pick it up on the 7th. You can always pick it up after the date has passed if you can't make it to a meeting on your anniversary date. My sponsor even encouraged me to pick up a chip at every meeting I regularly went to that week. He said to do that not to make me feel "special", but to encourage people with less time that it can be done. I celebrated 5 years in April and my home group gives out "special" chips for 5 years, 10 years and every decade after that to home group members.

It's funny you bring this up.

I have a chip coming up on September 22.

Actually, I had a beer and a few Xanax pills on that date for the year in which I got sober.

But, I went to a treatment center on September 22 and asked for help.

So I view it as my sobriety date.

Some people don't start counting until they quit taking detox meds (in my case, Tranzene).

I think that Grunge gave you good advice about how to count days and when to pick up your chip.

Glad you're with us.

We hope you keep up the great work.
