It works!

What i can report is that i am not drinking, so my plan is working.
It's been nearly 6mths now. If there is any advice i can give to other newcomers, it is that it is not easy, but is definately worth it.
I got through the first months by absenteeism, but now have an improved plan for longevity.
In my case i was a weekend binge drinker, i believe i drank as i was social awkward, and it gave me confidence. Also i would fill voids of time, or when i was bored, with drink.
Coming here has helped a lot, as the advice given is very useful, so thank you to everyone.

Weekend drinker here too. I am laying awake desperate to make a change. I tell myself every Sunday that's it! But it seems I cannot do it alone. How did you do it?

Congratulations on your six months - that is awesome. I've been really struggling to make it past 8 - 10 weeks. I think I drink for many reasons (including the ones you mentioned above) but mainly because I just don't handle staying sober as well as I need to, to stay sober! If you have any tips as to what helped you with being socially anxious and how you learned to socialise sober I would very much appreciate it ..... Gabe x

the big break through was deciding to do the things i enjoyed doing and letting the social side naturally emerge. For example, a positive thing is making a trip to the cinema with friends, afterward i can socialise as i have a topic of conversation. Just going to a bar is negative, i feel awkward, it feels like everyone else is drinking and i just shrink into myself. So now i do a lot more cinema and a lot less bars!
I have by no means conqered this, and it takes constant effort, especially in the planning. But i feel like i am at least in control.

That's awesome. I'm trying to get to feeling ok about just saying no, I don't want to meet in bars anymore. If you want to meet me come for lunch! No easy here but I don't feel as uncomfortable with it anymore. Love the cinema too. I'm going tomorrow! Gabe z
