'Dry January'
'Dry January'
Here in the UK we have something called 'Dry January'. It's a thing, aimed at people who have over-indulged over Christmas, to not drink for the month of January. I am aware it is not aimed at alcoholics but it could still be a 'line in the sand' moment for some of us.
I wonder how many folk here have set a date when they will stop, and how successful that has been?

I have made many many New Years resolutions over the years. I've only been successful 2 times. In 1991 I quit smoking after 20 years. Last year I quit drinking after I don't know how many years. I guess those were two big resolutions.

Thank you! I want to encourage people and let them know that it CAN be done. You must keep trying and make it a priority. SR helped me stay on track. I was a lurker until recently. Interacting here helps enormously, but ultimately the task rests within you (general you not specific you)

We have it in the US too - like we have "Sober October." It's definitely not for the alcoholic but it's a great way for an alcoholic to convince themselves they aren't one. "I made it a month so...."
I quit once - 22+ mo ago. I don't have another go round in me and I work every day to live my best recovered life. Others' experience is different, or their reasons for quitting vary - example, my now husband decided on a one year total revamp of his life including getting sober and it turned into a life of recovery pretty quickly.
People who want a health boost - not drinking is always a good idea. For an alcoholic, IMO and IME, it's gotta be a permanent choice.
