21 days sober

I've reached 21 days without a drop of alcohol. I found after worrying so much about my health and feeling worse and worse regret after a binge (drinking 12 beers 3-4 nights a week sometimes more over the last 17 years, horrible hangovers as well as totally screwing up my GI system, stomach pain, heartburn reflux and pain under my right ribs..

I think I permanently changed the way I think about alcohol. I have no cravings or desire to drink. When I think about drinking even a beer I can literally feel how toxic it would taste and feel. I'm guessing after repeated disgust and regret that I somehow hypnotized or convinced myself to gate alcohol. I've also done the same thing with ciggarettes and just quit smoking too.

My stomach issues reflux and ibs are still here, but better. I'm hoping they go away with more time sober. I have bloodwork tests next tuesday. I notice I actually am a happier person and enjoy doing the things I thought alcohol made better, even more sober and I don't have to gate myself the next day.

The physical withdrawal was mainly headaches, bouts of hyperglycemia if I don't eat within 3 hours, some dizzy spells and my sleep was a little off.. still getting anxiety and dizzy spells at night but I generally feel a lot better!

Did anyone notice their skin and face improve? Did you continually notice physical health improve over the first year?

Those are the things that really motivate me! I want to live a healthy rest of my life (I'm 35). Thanks for reading!

Well done! Yes, - my skin is more clear and my hair is a lot thicker again, with it's shine back. Physically, I've taken to working out on the cross trainer (It's boring, so I do it to music or the TV) but in general health improves in no time. Keep up the good work

Great job spybee.
I'm 20 days sober and I can relate to you. I definitely noticed my skin clear and eyes clear up. I'm still fighting with the anxiety, appetite and sleep issues but they seem to be getting better gradually. I've started some medication that suppose to help with this. The thought of me drinking again causes me even more anxiety, which is why I drank in the 1st place. Going to meetings everyday, talking to my sponsor has helped tremendously.

That's awesome, I'm right behind you at 19 days. The urge to drink today was really strong. It's Friday that's the danger zone for me. I thought it through and I'm not drinking today. Tommorow is another battle. Good luck to you.

Awesome congrats! Keep it up, I am feeling more and more alive each day. I battled with myself a lot in the past, one thing that helped was recognizing those urges as a monster that tried to convince me to drink and I imagine telling it to shut up haha. It seems so much easier now and not really getting any urges.. I've been around 2 yearly event in the last 25 days that normally I would get hammered, had no issues not having one drop. It felt great to wake up and grab breakfast with no nasty hangover!

Thanks! I am with you on the anxiety... it's tough, just try and find something or somewhere you can escape all the daily stresses and take care of you, reward yourself with something positive and healthy. Keep building those sober days and enjoy a new beginning :-)
