Yep- sugar here too. And it's so common, one reason being that we were ingesting a LOT of sugar in alcohol.
I gave myself a lot of free reign in my first year of sobriety, focusing on eating healthy (and having treats) then adding exercise in the later part of last year, and for real in 2017 (I am almost 18 mo sober now).
Take care of yourself and be kind!

For me the articles titled:
Trading Alcoholism for Sugar Addiction
and
Sugar and Alcoholism
were very informative. Links below.

Sugar and Alcoholism
I absolutely traded alcohol for a severe sugar addiction.
Ice cream with chocolate sauce, cheap cookies dipped in strong coffee, hunks hunks of chocolate, even started baking pies!
Started finding myself suddenly growing weak/tired/confused, so would immediately have MORE sugar, MORE coffee, which worked for about a half hour.
Then found myself literally having to go home because of overwhelming sleepiness.
Turns out I had turned myself into a full-blown hypoglycemic!
It can be very serious.
The solution for me was to follow what is basically the diet for someone with diabetes.

I'm almost a year alcohol free and can attest to my sense of taste recovering. I used to add chilli to foods that I thought were mildly spiced, but they were fiery and uneatable to others.
Plus, whilst drinking I'd developed nasal polyps (yuck) for which I used a nasal spray, to no avail. I couldn't smell properly. But now, I no longer use the spray, the polyps have shrunk and I can smell a delicate rose, cut grass and my wet dogs. The simple joys of stopping drinking - dulled senses returning!
