Injuries
Anyone go harder with their athletic pursuits because drinking has filled that adrenaline junkie rush? I see a pattern between people who take life risking activities daily with alcoholism...
I've been sober for a couple weeks (forgot how many days), and have been taking more risks than usual and tore my acl/pcl/lcl in the park skiing yesterday. I'm glad I was with a friend that knew I'd stopped drinking, and kept me from picking up a sixer.
I guess fentanyl will do it for now...
Time to sell the business, become sedentary, and get a desk job.

Hey sober,
So sorry to hear about your ski accident but way to go on not picking up a sixer!! And congrats on your weeks of sobriety!!!! Almost a month now!!!
I would, however, really really discourage fentanyl. I come across articles almost daily on the dangers and deaths around the drug and the epidemic it's becoming.

Please talk to a doctor about your injury and I'm sure they can find a safer alternative

I'm sorry about your injury. Has your dr prescribed Fentanyl? I'm very surprised by that because it has become to be known as an extremely dangerous drug. I hope your leg heals well.
I thought I did dangerous stuff when I drank, but have been very careful when I drink lately.
I figured I'd replace drinking with other high-risk activities.
Just want to numb myself for a while; if only for an hour. I'm having very disturbing thoughts.

An injury and alcohol is a very bad combo. It won't be an hour, it will be months of numbing: with an injury every day is a day to drink.
Change your thoughts. They are your thoughts, yours to change.

The doc can suggest better pain management. Those injuries can be serious. Some discomfort can be due to what you don't eat. At least eat some greens and protein. drink water. (not just sugared water)
Sobersolstice: Sounds like you need good medical care, pain management with careful restrictions so as to avoid addiction. I had bad muscle damage and benefitted from Lidocaine patches (non addictive, far safer from the highly addictive Fentanyl) We are not permitted to give medical advice on this site. Get a good, knowledgeable physician and ask her/him. Good luck.

Sorry to see the news about your injury, sobersolstice. That is really unfortunate.
To your original question: although I don't participate in any 'adrenaline' sports, I do sometimes push a little harder than I should with my running (putting in too many miles at once, not resting, etc.).
I agree with the other posters - avoid fentanyl. If you can get in some healthy foods and water, it will probably speed up your healing time.
Get better soon!

Being in pain, hungry and restless will only increase your chances of picking up sobersolstice. You need to eat some real food, sort out the pain relief properly as mentioned above, and utilise this injury as a boon. Change your perspective, and think about the amount of time you have to put into your recovery program now. If you are in AA, get into the big book, trawl the SR site, look at the book sticky in the newcombers section, and grab some of them. Don't let this beat you, because as mentioned, that '1 hour' will become months or years and you will feel even worse at the end of it. Good luck mate.
Soberandhonest: Booze is not a pain killer. Booze is a pain maker. A sure way to increase your pain, both physical and emotional. If you are in pain don't get a shovel and start digging your way down to hell. A good doctor will know ways to alleviate pain without getting you addicted. But make sure that he/she knows what they're doing. Many do not or do not seem to care.
You seem to like risk situations. Standing at the very edge of a cliff. Could that be your AV talking? Get yourself an adrenaline rush? Keep playing Russian Roulette and it's just a question of time.

I'm really glad you didn't pick up a drink.
There is a wide selection of pain meds between Aleve and Fentanyl...
Are you scheduled for surgery? My last boss had that surgery after a skiing accident tore her ACL and she got a non-addictive/non-narcotic pain med and continued to work after the first couple days post-surgery. Once the surgery is over you can begin to heal. I would think that is considered emergency surgery.
