Alcohol detox

Hi,my girlfriend has had seizures before detoxing off alcohol.she was admitted to the hospital yesterday and they they dosed her with 320mg of valium, 2pills every hour plus ativan every 4 to 6 hours, and still giving it to her today and talking about releasing her tomorrow. That just don't seem right to me.was wondering if anyone had some helpful advice.

I've no idea on advice but do want you to know I care. Are you wondering if it's too soon for her to come home and understandably are concerned how to take care of her? Are there supports you can rely on?

Valium and Ativan are often given for alcohol detox because of seizures. I work at a detox and we have had to send clients to the hospital and normally they are only kept for about 48-72 hours then released. Perhaps you could speak with a doctor about getting her into a detox facility? If you have insurance you're looking at a free stay or minimal copay. They will typical keep her 5-7 days. a few days while she tapers off the medication and then a couple extra days for observation once she gets off the detox meds.

Hi Darren

you posted in our chat admin forum so I moved your thread here.

Seizures are pretty serious. I'd let the medicos do what they do best.

What makes you think it's 'not right'?

This is normal for alcohol detox. The Valium helps calm the tremors.

That's pretty standard procedure to administer benzos to calm down the anxiety and to prevent seizures. They will usually keep you for a few hours, to possibly overnight to make sure your vitals are stabilized, then send you home with benzos to finish the withdrawal taper.
Though during this time, would be a very good idea to talk with the hospital about seeing if they can get her into an inpatient rehab program.

Welcome to SR, sorry for what is going on. The hospital will be able to help her with the detox, but having a plan for recovery after is going to be important for her. You may want to talk to them to find out what supports are available.

Im sorry you're going through that. I've been there multiple times with my ex who ended up in the hospital over seizures from withdrawing from alcohol.. That seems normal procedure. It's not easy. But i do remember that my ex family try to encourage rehab at the hospital but never happened as he wasn't willing to go and change which eventually led to the break of the relationship.

Yes sounds normal, I was usually kept in for a bit longer than that though, about five-10 days. I was very unwell though, I'm sure they will get her through the danger period

Right is what her health care providers are prescribing for her Darrent. Do exactly what they tell you to do to aid in her care. She is lucky to have you there as an ally in her fight. I hope things are going well this morning.
