Introducing Myself
Hi, everyone. I'm here to quit drinking. Surprise!!!
I been drinking for 25 years, but the last few years things really started to get bad. My first seizure. My first medical detox. Totaled my first car. Got my first (and last!!!) DWI when I totaled my second car.
I've detoxed twice since the spring, but only managed to remain sober for a few weeks before relapsing. This is because I didn't have a good enough plan. No social support, no replacement activities, etc.
The DWI was a blessing in disguise because it forced me out of the closet and once I was out of the closet, I began to learn quite a bit about my alcohol problem and what I needed in order to recover. For me, it's not just quitting drinking. It's rebuilding an entire life in every area.
In January, I'll be getting IV amino acid therapy for a safe detox, and also to repair damaged neurotransmitters so I hopefully won't relapse due to insomnia, anxiety, boredom, depression, etc. After that, I'll work with a life coach who specializes in addiction recovery. He's going to help me with the "rebuild the life" part.
Between now and then, I'm working to reduce my alcohol by half because this increases the success of the treatment. It's really, really hard! I'm in mild withdrawal at all times.
I just had my 49th birthday. I didn't get as much out of this decade as I wanted because alcohol kept me at my C game rather than my A game. Rather than write this off as a wasted decade, I'm going to end on a high note and make it the decade I became sober.
So you see that this time, I'm going to have a real plan. You guys are an important piece of the puzzle, because support is critical!
So that's me. I'm going to go read some of your posts now... Looking forward to getting to know you!

By the way, I should let y'all know that my taper is medically guided. Once when I tried to taper on my own, it earned me a seizure.
When I go to do my amino acid treatment (10 days) in January, I'll start a thread about it and report what the experience is like. It's pretty groundbreaking addiction treatment with roots more in the orthomolecular world rather than the conventional treatment world. I'm psyched to see how it goes.

Hello, welcome! I'm glad you're making this step. It sounds like you have a great plan this time, and I'm glad you're seeing the reality of the situation now. You have years of birthdays left to enjoy sober!
Welcome SoberinSyracuse. Good to hear that you have a plan for a safe detox.
Have you considered joining an SR Class to meet members who are in the same stage of their sobriety; it's a great to give and receive support. I'll post a link in a minute.
