Struggling

Hi guys

I'm on day 6 of my week detox and today for some reason I am really struggling. I'm not sure if it's because it's sat night and normal that was a big drinking night for me but I could kill for a glass of wine right now. What tactics do you do to stop yourself and get your mind off wanting a drink ??
Thanks all. Feeling irritated !!

A lot of time we start feeling better after a couple of days and thoughts of drinking start to replace our resolve to quit.

I found it helpful to write down why I was quitting, what my life with alcohol was like, the problems, and what I hoped a sober life would be like.

I don't mean "think" about those things. I mean, break out pen and paper and record for now and for the other times you falter WHY you are on this recovery journey.

I have to keep myself really busy so I don't think about having a glass and sitting on this sites sometimes for hours helps. Keep up the good work. I am on day 44.

This is a great thread with tips for dealing with cravings:
The Alcoholism and Addictions Help Forums- by SoberRecovery.com (CarolD's tips for cravings)

Stay strong... and always "play the tape to the end"... what will you feel like tomorrow if you DO drink... and what you will feel like if you DON'T drink.
Keep that thought throughout the day.

Do anything to distract yourself.... I watch lots of films of an evening (if im not at an aa meeting) which has really helped.... choose a completely non alcoholic drink to sup too .... helps. Sugary snacks help with cravings too x

Hi Becks! Day 6 for me too but it's only 2:30 PM where I'm at. One tactic I use is go for a walk, cook dinner or clean. ANYTHING to get your mind off of that demon craving and it will soon pass! Just DON'T give in and drink.

becks - At first I too would have bad cravings on weekends . How I would over come was not sit at the same place I used to drink , ( kitchen table ) Do things you would do during the week - catch up on laundry - house work ect. My worse thing was to just sit and try to fight the AV . Move around , play online games .
Maybe going into the chat room here could be of comfort to not be alone Hang in there ..

Hi Becks, do anything that will pass the time so you can get past your cravings. I believe there are some great threads somewhere on this site that list a great number of things to keep you distracted from drinking. Personally, I read....a lot. As long as I am concentrating on something (like when reading), I'm not thinking about alcohol. Good luck. Great on 6 days.

Find a hobby that interest you.
Do research on it online.
I got into Marine fish tanks for a while. Even grew corals.
Now I fix just about everything on my "honeydo" list.
And that's a list that never ends.

Thanks for all your replies and great tips. Managed to get through the night without caving in and have just managed my first trip to the pub after my sons rugby game and had a coke. Big progress in my eyes. Nearly a week sober and feeling proud of myself. Ifs a nice comfort to know I can pop on here when struggling and get such great support from
Everyone.
Did anyone take anti craving drugs ? Did anyone find that they helped ?

Hang in there.
It's hard at times but we need to learn,
not to entertain the thought of drinking.
I have found out from my past that,
if I keep thinking about drinking,
before long,
I have a drink in my hand.
Do whatever you have to do,
get out and run around the block,
four or five times and the thought for the moment is gone.
