Dealing with Negative, Argumentative People
Any ideas?
JADE (the Alanon acronym) - don't Justify, Argue, Defend, or Engage (or Explain) . . . so pretty much just keep your mouth shut.
Any other tactics?

Don't argue with a fool because nobody will know the difference...
Time for a change of friends. Sorry if they are family or work associates. Then you may be stuck for a while.
Best to simply avoid negative people and energy vampires - they really do poison your mind.

I have a family member who will only see the dark side of any situation. He will see a program about helping homeless in our city get jobs and housing, and he'll think they are all swindlers who panhandle but secretly drive SUV's. Things like that....
He can be extraordinarily exhausting to be around with his negativity, but he is not argumentative nor does he raise his voice, at least.
I suppose how I have always dealt with people like that is to limit the amount of time I spend with them. Plus, I have the antidote of my own husband who is a very positive and hopeful person.
Perhaps that is the key: limit time spent with negative and argumentative people, and make sure that the other people in your life are positive and encouraging!

Though, I know it is hard to walk away or detach if the negative ones are those we must deal with daily (for example, coworkers).

Proverbs: A soft answer turns away wrath.
NT: As much as it lies within you, be at peace with everyone.
NT: Seek peace and pursue it.
These teachings get me through challenging conversations. I've learned I don't have to have the last word.

JADE pretty much sums it up. Implementation is the challenge. If executed well....JADE works. I use it in every day life....not just with my son. It saves me a lot of grief and helps me maintain my serenity. And it falls into the category of "what is within my control".
