First steps...
Hello folks. Today is my first day of attempting to give up drinking.
I am a male aged 45 and have been a heavy drinker most of my adult life but recently I have (and so have others) noticed that I've been hitting it a lot heavier than I should.
My last drink was late last night so haven't had a drink for 20 hours. I'm feeling a bit anxious and worried that I won't be able to sleep tonight.
I have 40mg Propranalol and 2mg Diazepam in my bathroom cupboard. Should I take them?
Am I likely to have withdrawal problems? I really don't want to have to drink or wean myself off. I've booked 4 days off work in order to start the detox.
Any advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks

Welcome Highwaystar! Congrats on your decision too, it's one of the best you could make.
If you have concerns that you might have severe withdrawals please consult with a doctor, especially before taking any meds. It's difficult to say if one will have WD's or not so checking with a physician can ease your mind as well as keep you safe.

Hi and Welcome to SR!
Congrats and your decision to quit drinking!
None can give medical advice here. For some people detox can be uncomfortable, for others even dangerous. If you have someone with you make sure that they monitor you. If in doubt please see a doctor.

My own experience, is to expect poor sleep but not to worry or get anxious about it. Goes with the territory for at least a few days for most. Longer for others. Ditto r.e. doctor though if you are worried.
Welcome to the forum! You've just made one of the best and most important decisions of your life, congratulations! You will figure it out. You'll find a lot of answers and support here, read a lot and post a lot.
I hear you, once the decision's made, I really didn't want to turn to alcohol for anything ever again and got through the detox with lots of liquids and a few benzos. Every situation is different and withdrawals can be dangerous, so best educate yourself on the subject and turn for medical help immediately if you experience any dangerous symptoms.
