This is a very well reasoned and written article. I urge anyone that has struggled with opiates to give it a read. It really illustrates the outdated and ineffective approach to opiate addiction that so many doctors and facilities still take. While I would probably stop short of taking the author's position that it is malpractice not to explore medical assistance, I do think that it is something people looking for help deserve to be informed about.
One thing I find off-putting about these articles is they never seem to address the blame the addict should hold in their lifestyle and death. No one spiked his food with oxy for years and he didn't accidentally fall on a needle over and over until he was too far gone. It may sound mean, but let's be real.
