New Years resolution.
There were so many times during my
drinking career that I would never drink
again. I swore up and down, vowed,
promised myself enough was enough.
After I entered recovery in rehab I
began to learn about addiction and
it affects on my mind, body and soul.
I learned that I needed to make some
important changes in my life reguarding
ideas, decisions, commitments, resolutions,
and so much more.
However, I needed to know how. So
I listened, read, absorbed as I heard
from other members that were also
learning how to remain sober themselves
a day at a time.
When it came to make a resolution
to never do something, I always failed.
As hard as I tried to make those resloutions
stick, they just never did. I felt hopeless.
Felt like a failure so many times.
Folks suggested for me to be willing to
not drink just for the day. Attend my AA
meetings. Listen, learn, absorb and apply
steps and principles of that program to
my everyday affairs.
As long as I made a conscience decision
to not drink today, followed it up by a
recovery program action, tools and knowledge
to help me, guide me, strengthen me, then
I would have a more successful attempt to
remain sober that day.
I no longer make resolutions because
of my past history and failures, so instead
I stay in the day, in the moment and that
way I have a firm grasp in remaining sober.
I began my recovery journey 24 yrs ago
and today I continue to follow what I learned
from the very beginning because it has worked
for me. If it continues to work, then I have no
need to change it.
Of course this is how it has been working
for me for a many one days at a time sober.
