If your therapist knows you gave a drinking problem, then it's time to find a new therapist.

What a stupid thing for a therapist to say, especially if you have been honest about your drinking issues. Your therapist isn't the one who will have to deal with the consequences of your drinking.

I hope you were being sarcastic when you said what you did.

Does your therapist know about your drinking? If not, you should be honest with them. I don't think it's very good advice for anyone, drinking problem or not, to be advised to go to happy hour and 'have one or two'. That's very irresponsible of the therapist.

What are you in therapy for, soberbrah?! Delusion of alcoholism, or something like that? Or alcohol phobia?

Is this therapist a doctor or just some quack who read a couple books in their spare time?

Be careful. We can tell ourselves that friends, therapists or colleagues have told us that we "should" drink. That's what we want to hear. In fact, if we ask them later they said nothing of the sort. We just pretended that's what they said because it's what we wanted them to say. That's why we're crazy.

I believe this is derived from the if you dont think your an alcoholic go to the nearest bar and youl soon find out motto

for your therapist to say this would suggest you doubt yourself as an alcoholic in sessions ?

why would a trained therapist say this otherwise does the therapist know your alcoholic soberbrah

whatever happens dont drink

Oh I'm afraid for you. Hopefully you have been completely honest with your therapist. Trying to train yourself to drink in moderation if an alcoholic is the definition of insanity. Wishing you the best.

I know it's BS and more to the point so do you Brah....this is not your first rodeo.

if you could just drink one or two you wouldn't need therapy...

If you are on this website, you likely know there is a dark side to drinking. Your therapist likely doesn't know fully about your past issues with alcohol. Its pretty common for many people to say "just have one or two" - unfortunately, for many of us it doesn't work that way because we want the effect that we get from drinking more than that.

Therapy won't treat alcoholism

Carl Jung recognised that 80 odd years ago

It's good that you are more wise than your therapist.

My AV is always looking for something or someone to give me permission to drink. That's why it's very important to be honest with myself. I don't know why a therapist or anybody would suggest to an alcoholic to go out and have a few, but I do know if I took them up on it, I'll be trashed for at least the next two weeks, and those people won't be the ones that are suffering and they certainly won't be around to help me out.
