A realistic look at sobriety (my view)
A realistic look at sobriety (my view)
So, I've been sober for a little while now.
I've heard some people on here seem depressed that they don't feel as great as they thought they would sober, so I thought I'd give my thoughts on that.
When people wonder what being sober would be like as long term addicts, my simple answer is it's what living is like.
Being drunk or high is hitting the pause button on life.
But that's all the good stuff and the bad stuff.
Like me, you might find that the problems you drank away start to come back. To the point I've been, at various points, badly suffering from anxiety and depression. I had these issues before I was drinking, and they're still there now.
You likely had issues before you started drinking or taking drugs, it's likely they contributed to your problems. They'll still be there.
Being sober is no magic bullet for your problems. There will be hard times.
But it's a starting point.
The good news is that from being sober you can start to work on actual, non destructive solutions to these problems.
Being sober takes hard work. Sometimes very hard work.
If I seem negative right now, rest assured, all of this pain is worth it. In return you get to live.
You experience joy, love, fun... everything.. everything good life had to offer awaits you at the end of this journey. Sometimes I'll be doing something simple like taking a walk and I'll get chills thinking I nearly threw all of it away.
No relapse, No Surrender.
Tom.
