Yes, it's something you have to decide to do and make it work for you.

Unfortunately my greatest motivator was pain. It was only then that I chose to stop.

To put a spin on the catchphrase, unless you are willing to make big decisions and big changes, nothing will change. I found that out for years. I "wanted" to quit but wasn't willing to make changes or put in the work, so I ended up drunk and in trouble time and time again. That's the pattern all of us came to know unfortunately

Its so basic but so true. And it can change today. Don't drink or use today.

Stopping is the first step obviously, and it's a decision 100% under your control. Staying stopped is the real bugger. For me the key was acceptance - I fully accept that I cannot/will not/never will be able to drink responsibly. I also had to accept that there is really no wordly/logcial/medical explanation as to why I cannot control my drinking, it simply IS. Once I got that out of the way everything else got a LOT easier!

Hi Missy.

I wish it hadn't taken me so long to make that choice. I knew I was out of control many years before I quit. What a waste. Glad you are here.

Absolutely - nothing was going to improve in my life unless I got sober and stay sober.
