Films about Addiction, sure this thread has been made but these are my additions...
August: Osage Country; Alcoholism and pill addiction in a family environment. Very realistic. Particularly recommended for relatives of addicts.
Withnail and I; Amazing, under-rated British film, set in the 60's, about an alcoholic aspiring-actor and his friend that finds success. Recommended to young people struggling with alcoholism.
Trainspotting; Obviously, heroin addiction in Scotland.
Filth; Again, Scotland. Written by Irvine Welsh, also the author of the novel Trainspotting. A mentally-ill, crooked cop struggles with addiction. Very funny until the end. Then, quite sad. Recommended for anyone who considers themselves a bad person.
Leaving Las Vegas; Nicolas Cage, acting well? It happens. He won an academy award. It's disturbing at best. Recommended for anyone who thinks they're a lost cause.
Crazy Heart; Recommended for anyone who feels they're in an industry that mandates intoxication... Roadies, musicians, those in the film industry and writers.
Any adaption of Brideshead Revisited; recommended for every alcoholic ever.
Requiem for a Dream; Some find it unrealistic - I would be inclined to agree on certain fronts - but undeniably harrowing. Recommended for those looking to be scared straight. But it has a purpose beyond that, it is an unapologetic portrayal of the worst-case scenario which we are so ready to dismiss.
