My Grandmother
My Grandmother
Well, my 88 year old Gran is having surgery this weekend. She may be 89 next Monday but she is still as sharp as a razor. She upset me a lot today when she touched my arm and said "if I wake up on Saturday, we'll go shopping in Dublin like we used to. And if I don't wake up, you don't worry. I have made sure that you are looked after". My dad thinks she was referring to "the will"...we all get threatened with "the will" on a fairly regular basis. It's funny that, in my moms family there have been so many rows over land over the years. But to be honest, it's something that I really don't give a **** about. Unlike some people, I have never expected to be handed something that is not mine.
I know that I have a reputation within my family for not being "sly". My mom often throws her eyes up to heaven about me and says "how did I rear such an innocent child". I told her that I was curling Grans hair today...she wants to look nice for when she sees Dr. Ali. My mom actually said "I am glad you are not like the rest of them...my sweet and thoughtful child".
I love you so much Granny xx

Well my Grandma made it through surgery.
My aunt was with her pretty much all day. She said the doctor was concerned because her hemoglobin count is lower than it should be, but we will deal with that later. I find life is more manageable when I think about small chunks at a time.
When I called in this evening she was sitting up in bed. Hospital gowns and tubes through the nose make everyone look dreadful. She had a slice of toast and two cups of tea with me. I can't praise the doctor and nurses highly enough. There was someone coming in to check on her every 15 minutes.
I wanted to weep because the first thing she said to me when I walked through the door was "did you have dinner? Did you have a proper meal today?" She is so frail but her mind is so sharp...she was asking me about things we were discussing last week!
Thank you all for your prayers and well wishes.
Love and hugs,
