I have a question

I feel like I am really ready to let go of alcohol but I also feel kind of sad about it. Alcohol has been like a friend to me, albeit a really bad friend! It almost feels like a loss. Is that normal?

Perfectly normal! I quit for 9.5 months, but went back mainly because of what you describe. I now know that alcohol is a frenemie and I'm leaving those people behind in 2014. Good luck. S x

I think i went through "the 5" stages of loss and grief . I was long overdue in changing though so i came through it pretty fast and furiously .. all i feel now is huge relief , freedom and optimism and mostly a content acceptance abut myself and life . Long may it continue ..

Bestwishes, m

I love this "alcohol is a frenemie" statement. Thank you!

No problem SeaScape. I hope I don't forget that again. I loved my sober life and then it tricked me into thinking it was a friend again.

We can do this!

Yep it's normal, like loosing a friend. But make no mistake on who that friend in disguise really is.

To me alcohol SEEMED like a friend who became a mortal enemy if I continued the relationship.

I missed it too, for a while, until my head was fully clear of its alcoholic fog. Then there was nothing to miss about it.

It was normal for me - alcohol/drugs is still the longest relationship I've had in my life.

Have you read "Drinking: A Love Story" by Caroline Knapp?

Great book-helped me a lot!

I think it's completely normal-it was a companion to many of us for so long. Pretend you're moving far away from that friend. You'll miss the friendship, but life moves forward, and you'll make new friends.
