My poem about escaping pain

I have been posting poems written by my brother, a crystal meth addict. But I have also realized that it is a good outlet for me as well and wanted to share one of mine. This one is about running & how it helps me cope with the pain I feel from losing my mother to addiction & the pain I feel seeing my brother destroy himself.

Why I Run

My adrenaline is pumping, my heart pounding in my chest
sweat covering my body, & I don't know if I can catch my breath

"One foot in front of the other," this mantra I repeat
no wimping out today, I have a race to complete

The more it hurts, the better...it helps ease the pain
the pain I feel about those I miss...& those who have gone away

My stomach is in knots & I don't know if I can go on
Yes you can idiot, Just force a smile and cheer your neighbors on

Over halfway to the finish & cold chills have begun
my body is aching & my arms have started to go numb

Focus...focus on those in your family who are trying to find their way
lost in their own race, not knowing how to get away

Think about the race they are running, their pain worse than yours today
maybe if you keep pushing forward, they will know you're here to stay

Mile after mile, I trudge forward knowing oblivion is on the way
that blissful mental state that makes all my worries go away

I see the finish up ahead & my second wind has kicked into gear
I know I can do this now...there is no need to fear

Through the crowd I run, trying to show them I have not been undone
Strong, determined, & willful I finish, Glad today I have won

Any one else on here run & find it helpful?

I couldn't run if my life depended on it, but I do like your poem. Thanks for sharing it.

Hugs

Not a runner much, except chasing my son around... but I can relate to the poem, and to pushing yourself past that point where mind becomes clear, and you let it all go... even if its only for a few minutes. You and your brother are both very talented, thanks for sharing.
