Does alcohol affect your hormones?

Good morning! Day 13 and feeling good. Have my plan for the day and I'm sticking to it. My question for those out there who may know, does alcohol affect your hormones?

I know that we are not medical professionals and I am not asking for medical advice but I would like to see if anyone else shares this experience. I am a young woman that is not close to menopause, yet. However, while drinking I feel like it was affecting my hormones. I would get mood swings, it would throw my cycle off and of course the hot flashes and this continued after I quit. It could just be the normal alcohol withdrawal or symptoms of alcoholism but wanted to know if any other women experienced this?

Thanks for sharing

Oh yes! Detoxing affects your whole body. It took me a few cycles to get back on track. The hot flashes were the worst.

I'm in menopause and the hot flashes stopped after I quit drinking.

I know that for men it inhibits the production of testosterone. So yeah, it does affect hormones.

Maybe this site helps:

Alcohol and Hormones - Alcohol Alert No. 26-1994

The main page is:

National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA)

It seems reliable. First paragraph on the "About NIAAA" page:

"The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) is one of the 27 institutes and centers that comprise the National Institutes of Health (NIH). NIAAA supports and conducts research on the impact of alcohol use on human health and well-being. It is the largest funder of alcohol research in the world."

So if you need to know something about alcohol, you might find it there.

I haven't had a cycle since college (sorry if that's TMI!) I'm newly sober so time will tell... Interesting topic though.

The "hot flashes" and night sweats disappeared once I obtained sobriety...and I started my regular cycle again. Amazing what alcohol does to the body!

It truly is amazing. It's also amazing how I dulled my senses down so much that I didn't realize that I was damaging my body that much. The hot flashes and night sweats were the worst but my cycle has always been regular and it started getting out of wack once I went through my last relapse and then got sober. It's just really amazing how differently my body works without alcohol and how much it's still working to adjust to not having it.

Thanks for the site James872. I will check it out.
