going to vegas thursday

this thursday im going to vegas. I have been going every year for the last few years, but this will be the first time that i will not be drinking.i havent even flown on a plane without drinking in about 15 years. Today is Day 14 of my sobriety. Honestly i'm not nervous about the trip and not drinking, i'm more so excited to do Vegas sober... I'm learning to live without alcohol. but i'm not getting ahead of myself i'm taking my sobriety one second at a time. has anyone ever been to vegas and stayed strong and sober?

I went to Vegas for my 21st birthday. I am sure it can be done. There will surely be some very interesting people watching available to you. Tons of awesome food, great shows, and gambling! Think of all the $$$ you will not have to spend on alcohol! Or waiting at the bar for another drink!
I would suggest some sort of plan tho, to help keep you sober. Do you have someone around you who will be able to help you? A friend to text or call? Id get SR on your phone as an app if possible
Im sure you will have a fun and sober trip!
Congrats on 14 days sober!!

Hello imhere2day,

Congratulations on your 14 days, that is awesome.

Yup. Me

There's several thousand recovering alkies living in Vegas, and doing just fine. We have over a thousand meetings every week, and several _in_ the casinos and at least one meeting _inside_ a bar. There are more 12 step programs packed into Vegas than any other city of it's size. Basically, about half the population is one program or another.

Whenever I go out to the grocery store, the mall, to a show, or just walk thru a casino, I will recognize at least half a dozen peeps from one meeting or another. I know bartenders who have decades of sobriety, blackjack dealers, pit bosses, even entertainers.

Here's where you can find a meeting:

Welcome to the Las Vegas Central Office Website | Las Vegas Central Office

and here is the phone number if you feel squirrely for whatever reason:

702-598-1888

If you want to have _serious_ fun in Vegas go to a couple meetings as soon as you arrive and hook up with the locals. There's nothing like hanging out with experienced Vegas partiers who know all the special discounts to shows and the best restaurants... and who are doing it _sober_.

Mike

Do you HAVE to go? I mean, is staying home even an option? I've never been to Vegas since I've got sober, but I know I am going to avoid going there for a long while.

If you're 100% committed to going, then I suppose you should look for some kind of outdoor activities. Is there a mountain hike or something outside of town? What about going up to that sky-view walk? Anything to get out of those hotel casinos.

When you are inside those hotels, it is quite possibly the worst pressure environment for someone trying to quit drinking. Best of luck!

hi, i live in new york and am surrounded by people my age drinking..middle age..everyplace. even on trains!
Just got back from trip to visit family in vegas, stayed at a casino hotel, and found its an amazingly sober place by comparison. Only a few people are openly boozing in the casinos. Casinos are ok, do not hangout in bars....go to a meeting and say hi to our people.
