Giving the dog back to my sister

in one week.

Just cried for 30 minutes straight.

I feel like my heart is being torn out, like my child is being kidnapped.

I'll probably never see her again.

God no wonder I drank. I have too many strong feelings.

Surely if your sister has the dog then there is a chance of you seeing it in the future. I remember when my cat died. Even though I was using I felt a great deal of pain around it. I think I love animals more than humans...but that's ok. Can't you speak to your sister about arranging to see her etc.

She lives on the other side of the country, and is in medical school residency for 80 hours/week.

No, I don't think that's good for the dog, but it's "hers" (she paid for it)...though it is more attached to me.

Helping your sister with the dog was a great thing to do. Maybe you are ready to adopt a dog of your own. It is a big responsibility and helpful to sobriety for me too. I adopted a little dog when i was 3.5 months sober. I have never once blamed him for my slips, but he does help keep me sober, i want the best for him.
Lots of my med students have dogs and although the hours are long for them, they managewith help.(dog walkers get $21.00 per hour here)

Here... :ghug3

It's still not a good enough reason, you're worth staying sober for!!

Have you thought about the idea of adopting a dog who really needs a loving home after your sister takes the dog?

I'm so sorry. :ghug3

Ok I hate it when people are like, "just get a new dog!"

I know you love this animal dearly and can't stand the thought of loosing it.

But if you work on yourself and stay sober it will be ok.

And down the road when you're ready... There's hundreds upon hundreds of sweet, wonderful, loving dogs looking for a forever home. Maybe one of them NEEDS you.

My whole life is in flux, finishing a degree, selling a house, moving to who knows where for a job. So another doggy just wouldn't work right now.

But I don't drink, so I'll just have to feel those tears. I'm sure I'll come out stronger for it.
