All big book quotes 1st edition.
4 editions. there were a few words changed from the 1st edition. in the other 3, the 1st 164 pages are the same. the persoanl stories in the back are different between editions.
copyright stuff why we have that in our sig.
copyright stuff why we have that in our sig.
It's a copyright issue that AA World Services insists forums like this follow.
The first edition slipped out of copyright - so quoting is fair game.
the other 3 editions are copy right protected.
the sigs just save people having to write that every time they post

I've been confused regarding this, and still am, in a small way. Since there is no copyright on the first 164 pgs, why do folks still feel the need to make this statement when quoting from these pgs (which is where most, if not all quotes are from).....?

And then you can paraphrase.

Ok, I fibbed a bit; I'm not confused atall.
"...Please do not post material containing AA copyrighted literature..."
That's the key sentence, and the key word in that sentence is 'copyrighted.' There is no copyright covering the first 164 pages of the BB (the pages from which most folks post), or the stories in the 1st edition. Therefore, quotes from these pages need no notation.

It's an interesting situation to be sure. I wondered about this myself, I am always curious when one 'why' doesn't get a good answer.
I learned about the history of the copyright of the first edition, who owned it and why it was permitted to lapse, and why the copyright restrictions on the other editions continue to be vigorously enforced even on websites that do nothing but support and promulgate the word of AA. AA members have done jail time for violating this copyright, so this is indeed serious business.
Dee and MorningGlory are indeed doing their job.

Sorry, he was sentenced by a Mexican court to one year in prison, but a small fine was paid instead. This happened in 1994.
The first information I read about this today was from silkworth.net. I corroborated that at Section Mexico Litigation Documents at aamo.info which has a page of pdfs called Mexico Litigation. GSOwatch.aamo.info supports this too.
A similar thing happened in Germany resulting from free distribution of AA literature to jails and hospitals.
