Alcohol & Lexapro question...

Hey all, does anyone out there have any experience with Lexapro and drinking. I have been on Lexapro for anxiety for a few years now and I was talking to my doctor about it and how after a night of drinking my anxiety would be so much worse. He told me it was because Lexapro doesnt like alcohol and therefor when you drink a lot it actually makes you feel worse. What I didnt think to ask him was what the long term effects of Lexapro and and drinking had on you. Im worried that I have done some significant damage to myself from my earlier years of heavy drinking while on Lexapro. Has anyone out there been in the same situation?

I know that alcohol and anti-depressants/anti-anxiety meds don't mix.

But, for long term problems, you should check with your dr.

I have drank and been on all types of anti-depressants. I also felt way despressed and anxious when hungover. We are on the meds bc we are depressed. Our seratonin levels aren't right to begin with and then we throw alcohol in the mix and the meds don't even have a chance. I'm hoping my prozac will finally be able to work now.

I don't think that it is "harmful" per se, but alcohol negates the effectiveness of lexapro as evidenced by your increased anxiety.

Mixing alcohol and psych meds is a recipe for some really, really bad stuff. Ask me how I know! Physically I'm fine, but I can't name a single good thing that came out of that experience for me. Some meds really work the liver pretty hard on their own, even without alcohol.

All the more reason to not drink and stay in close contact with your doctor.

well, I've never heard of a med that mixes well with alcohol, especially a anti-d like lexapro.
Maybe google alcohol and lexapro Sara - see for yourself

alcohol can interfere with any medication, including vitamin absorption. I don't understand paying for a prescription and paying for alcohol.....why bother with all this hard work?

Stay stopped! Alcohol is a depressant...

I've been on anti depressants for over 10 years and have drank for a good portion of that time. You aren't supposed to mix, and the meds work much better w/out the booze working against them. I guess the only way of knowing is to get some blood work done. My blood work has come back fine btw.

Sugar bear is right. Now that I have been off of alcohol for 8 days or so, depression has hit me full force. I'm going to a psychiatrist in a week or so to help treat my depression. Alcohol sucks as a treatment plan.
