Creamy vodka pasta sauce?
Creamy vodka pasta sauce?
My boyfriend is making us pasta for dinner and is using a creamy vodka pasta sauce. It's from a jar, he's not like pouring vodka into it. I've heard that alcohol cooks off when heated. Is it safe for me to eat this?
There is a lot of wisdom on this issue. I'm sure someone more experienced will share soon. But dinner is coming along so, read the label. Does the ingredient list include alcohol? I'm guessing it won't. And Vodka sauce doesn't taste a lot like the alcohol so maybe it cause any cravings.
On the other hand, pasta is my absolute DOC. I would rather have some great bucatini than alcohol any day. (speaking from the right side of sobriety).

Alcohol doesn't cook off as much as people think...
Alcohol Burn-off Chart
I've never heard of a vodka pasta sauce so I don't know whether it's really alcoholic or merely flavoured.
Different people have different priorities but I don't recommend people new to recovery take too many risks - it's hard enough as it is without adding possible hurdles of our making IMO.
I'd play it safe in future

If the sauce had just a bit of arsenic in it to give it that nutty and so special arsenic flavor that he loves so much, would you feel good about eating it?
If he's severely allergic to nuts, then tomorrow fix him a nice Thai dish with just a little nut sauce, not nearly enough to stop his breathing completely. Hardly there at all, when you look at percentages of ingredients.

Hmmm... I'm thinking if I cooked a creamy pasta sauce for my girlfriend who has a drinking problem it would be thoughtful, likely tasty (since I can cook up a storm) but most importantly... innocuous. However, creamy vodka pasta sauce? Why in blue hell would I even consider that? Come to think of it, why is this even a question? Why take any chances with creamy vodka anything?
IMO, avoid it and then ask yourself why this choice of meals was a consideration in the first place.

Honestly it wouldn't bother me. I also don't have a problem with Listerine.
I've made vodka cream sauce many times myself, but not since I got sober. I wouldn't make it anymore because I'd have to buy vodka, but I don't have any problems eating it.
Do what you think is best.

I get your point. I checked the jar and it wasnt even listed as an ingredient haha...so I think I'm fine. I didn't put much sauce on it because I was still a little questionable. I feel alright today, so I'm not stressing about it. Thanks everyone for your replies!
Its all based on your intentions of why you are eating it. You are:
1. Eating it because you enjoy the rich flavors alcohol brings to food.
(OK in my book)
or
2. Eating it because you want to see if you can get away with it.
(Dangerous, and I don't recommend it)
or
3. Eating it because you want to try and get drunk.
(Won't likely happen, but you may as well just drink if your doing this)
Only you know the real answer here. Just be honest with yourself.
But if you are at all concerned about eating it, then just don't. It isn't worth the debate that will roll around in your mind.
