Big Book Quote--Stopping Early
*~*~*~*~*^ Big Book Quote ^*~*~*~*~*
"Though there is no way of proving it, we believe that early in our
drinking careers most of us could have stopped drinking. But the
difficulty is that few alcoholics have enough desire to stop while
there is yet time."
Alcoholics Anonymous, 1st. Edition,
More About Alcoholism, pg. 32

That has everything to do with denial. It can't happen to me. For me, having grown up in an alcoholic home, I decided early on that I would NEVER be like that, and I went into 20+ years of proving myself wrong. I dove in with my eyes wide-closed.
My first drink was at the age of 13. Weekends were made for Michelob.
I often wonder how differently my life would have turned out if I had received treatment at 19 after my first DWI.
For those reading these boards and feeling that this can't happen to you, I am here to tell you that I am living proof that it CAN happen to you.
And I am also here to prove that if I could get sober after the train-wreck my life turned into, so can YOU!
You don't have to be a low-bottom drunk to get better - all you need is a desire to stop. That can start very early on, so if you are here looking; it is probably a great idea to stop NOW. SR is a great place to start.

It was imposssible for me to stop early because I was comparing myself to those around me or to the stereotype I had of what an alcoholic was. At the time I did not listen to those who told me not to compare consequences but relate to how alcoholics think, feel, and drink. I could find common ground in that approach but it conflicted with what I had already preconceived. Further, my drinking, at that stage, had not caused much pain and without the pain I would still be drinking!
