MAKING A. A. YOUR HIGHER POWER

". . . . . You can . . . make A. A. itself your 'higher power.'
Here's a very large group of people who have solved their
alcohol problem. . . . .many members . . . . have crossed the
threshold just this way. . . . .their faith broadened and
deepened. . . . transformed, they came to believe in a
Higher Power. . . . ."
TWELVE STEPS AND TWELVE TRADITIONS, pp. 27-28

No one was greater than I, at least in my eyes, when I was
drinking. Nevertheless, I couldn't smile at myself in the
mirror, so I came to A.A. where, with others, I heard talk
of a Higher Power. I couldn't accept the concept of a Higher
Power because I believed God was cruel and unloving. In
desperation I chose a table, a tree, then my A.A. group,
as my Higher Power. Time passed, my life improved, and I
began to wonder about this Higher Power. Gradually, with
patience, humility and a lot of questions, I came to believe
in God. Now my relationship with my Higher Power gives me
the strength to live a happy, sober life.

Early on, I used to hear ppl suggest that if you're having trouble coming up with a God-type of HP, to use the program as you HP. I remember thinking, at the time, "I believe in God.....God's my HP.....how silly to have to use the program as your HP."

LOL.......well, with the clarity of hindsight..... the tables/program/steps WERE and sometimes still ARE my HP. Sometimes, I just don't "get" God. Sometimes, I felt and/or still feel like I can't see, hear, feel or detect God anywhere in my life. I'm usually halfway decent at seeing him in your lives though....to see the people who got and are staying sober and happy in spite of all the odds against them is a big-time reminder- and sometimes that's all the reminder I need to be able to open my eyes a little wider and see Him/Her working in MY life.

God = Group of Drunks.

Been using this for 20 years and it works. My ex-sponsor, with 25 years, is an atheist and has very good life and solid program. Please don't tell me you can't stay sober without a conventional Christian deity. I'm proof it isn't so. And that's why there are very few countries on earth where you won't find AA meetings.

What a higher power -- and it doesn't matter what you choose -- does is reinforce that I'M not the higher power, which is pretty much how active drunks think. God bless Bill W and the Steps. They work.

Thanks, Carol ...
