Prevent alcoholic parent from driving
My father is currently in a residential program (due to the Marchman Act) but is planning to leave on Friday against their advice. He has only completed the assessment portion of the Marchman Act, so the judge hasn't ordered treatment yet. My father will drink as soon as he gets out and is very dangerous on the road. Recently, he had two hit and runs on the same day and ended up in another county without knowing how he got there. The police brought him to the hospital but never charged him with a DUI. He did get violations for leaving the scene of the accidents. He just paid court fees.
Does anyone know if we have a right as his family to keep his car from him? I know I can't stop him from drinking, but I would be horrified if he killed someone because I didn't do anything. Please let me know how you have handled a similar situation.
Thank you!

Hi EJS, and Welcome to SR!!!
You certainly have a right to be concerned for the safety of everyone else on the roads including your Dad. I don't know if you can take his car from him, but you can call the police and report him any time you know he is out driving.
Marchman Act
I found this link with more information about the Marchman Act. Perhaps there is more information about what you could do........
I'll hope and pray that your father will use the help he is being offered.
