Want to stop drinking but afraid, please help

I have socially drinked since I was 18, but never been a problem. 9 months ago I started drinking heavy, and for the past 6 months, I have been drinking a half liter of 80 proof liquor every single night.

I need to stop, it is going to kill me. I am afraid to stop drinking becuase I think I may get withdrawl symptoms.

Does anyone know if it is safe to stop completely all at once, or do I need to slowly stop?

I am terrified about what might happen and that makes me pick up the bottle every night again. I really want to stop, but I dont know if it is safe. I was sick one night a few weeks ago and barely drank anything at all, but that was the only night I slowed down.

Someone, please let me know what I need to do???

Welcome - glad you're here. Detoxing can be dangerous for sure..... The best thing to do is to get medical help (doctor, addiction specialist, detox facility or ER).

I'd go online and see if there are any doctors who specialize in addiction (for starters), or just go to the ER and get help right away. I know it's scary and hard to reach out for help, but definitely don't try to go alone on this.

Lots of support here, too........ Hang in there - and hope you get the help you need.:ghug3

Hi--I went to my doctor and told him how much I was drinking because every time I tried to stop, I would have terrible withdrawal and pick up again. He is supervising my detox with medication, and I am seeing him tomorrow so that he can make sure I am safe. This has allowed me to have more resolve this time because I have the support of a medical doctor.

I cant go to an ER, I have work and family obligations that cannot be put on hold. That is why I really need to know what the safest way to do this on my own is. I cannot be inpatient at any hospital....

What medications can be used to stop withdrawl symptoms, I am not in the USA and I can get just about anything I want OTC. I need to know how much alcohol consumption for how long would put me at risk for dangerous withdrawl symptoms, and what medication I should take at my level of drinking ( 1/2 liter 80 proof every day) to stop withdrawl symptoms... Does anyone have and guess as to how I should proceed...

Nobody here can diagnose you or give you medical advice...if you can get drunk instead of family obligations that can't wait, surely you can get well....see a doctor...

SR has a strict no medical advice policy...advising you on how to detox would be medical advice.

Detox can be dangerous but many do it without supervision at home because they don't know any better. I hope you get the help you need.

Please stick around SR is a great place for support and nonmedical advice.

The safest way is not to do it on your own. I realize that you feel your family/work obligations cannot be interfered, but really, if you don't get this under control it could be alot worse in the long run.

Wish you the best.

I will try halfing it every week and see how that goes. I now know that you cant give any medical advice. Can anyone who has drank as much as I have let me know what they went through and what medications their DR put them on? I am not asking for advice now, I am asking for someone to tell me what they went through. I dont have an option to go to an ER, there is none here that can help me, this is not the USA.

cabledude, thanks for the post. I will try that. I also do want to hear from someone that drank as much as I did for as long as I did (about half liter of 80 proof liquor for the last 6 months) to know what they went through and what medications they were given (not medical advice, just a story of what they experienced)

I've never consulted a Doctor to Recover. I've withdrawn from many things, I thought I was going to die. I never have as of yet.

Withdrawing from anything just is very hard to do however it can be done.

Last time that I drank or used, I not only took myself off of the crap and drinking and I also took myself completely off all my medications (Lexapro, Zanex, etc.) that was probably really stupid.

Although I am no Doctor, just do what you feel you need to do, the only thing that I noticed that caught my eye was the title.

Want to stop drinking but afraid, please help
The word but. I still have a issue using that word. Someone once told me that when using the word but in a sentence that everything you said before the word but is a lie and after the word but is the truth. Now I am not too sure about that LOL but I try to do things that my Sponsor and others are teaching me to do.

If I can do this I am celebrating 9 months today, than you surely can!

Good luck to you!

Please get some proper medical attention. Can't stress this enough. As LaFemme said, we can't offer advice on this. But yes, it can be extremely dangerous to just stop.

And stick around here. It's a good place.

I am a kinda a hypochondriac, when I read about symptoms of things, I usually get them due to fear. I really want to stop drinking, but the more I read about it on the internet, the more I hear how dangerous it is. That is why i am afraid. I dont want to risk my life by quitting. I really need to hear what other people with my level of drinking when through. I dont want to endanger myself, so hearing what others in my situation did to stop would help

I really can stress how important it is to see a Dr.
Nothing should be, or can be more important than your health and well being.

I detoxed on my own many many times - the last time I suffered a series of mini strokes...the effects of those will never go away.

I was lucky, I could have just as easily have been dead.

I'm not being melodramatic - this is really what happened to me.
It's annoys me immensely when people downplay the seriousness of alcohol withdrawal.

If you don't want to risk your life, then get professional help.

Nothing is more important than getting good professional help.
Get in touch with your consulate if you do not know where to go.

I'd like to remind everyone of our medical advice rule:

10. Medical Advice: No Posts giving medical advice, medication advice, or psychiatric advice. Do not use the forum to give or ask for professional medical or psychiatric advice. If you are a medical professional, please remember the forums and chat are for peer support only and not to be used for distributing professional medical advice and/or using the forum to represent your professional services. Medical and Psychiatric advice includes giving a diagnosis, treatment plan, medication advice and dosage suggestions, over the counter and natural home remedies that should be approved by medical professionals. Detox can be dangerous and life threatening at times. Please consult with your physician.

If you can't find help, then maybe you'll get lucky enough that help will find you - such as driving into a ditch, domestic violence, incapacitated to take care of said family and obligations. Judges order people into treatment programs or jails all the time, whether they have the time or not.

I've heard stories of people detoxing in jail - and it sounds awful.

I live in Panama, if you dont have insurance, then no DR or Hospital will help you, even if you are dying. I guess since noone will give me any info, I am doomed....

How much is your life worth to you? Won't have much of a family or a job if you can't get sober and do it safely.

Just something to think about.
