Ahhh... Out of the cycle!
Of stopping for 4-7 days, then byuying a bottle for a few weeks (months?), then stopping then starting, etc... I am a couple weeks clean (Thanks Dee!! Your last reply to me really hit home). Two days ago, my wife and I were supposed to meet friends at a certain time to avoid rush hour traffic, my wife was asked to work an hour late and did not have the common coutesy to call and let me know so we were all left hanging around not knowing what was going on. At first I was extremely angry and my first reaction was, I was already planning on where I'd get a bottle of vodka later that day because I "deserved it" because I was angry... What a childish attitude :-( When I sat back and looked at my feelings, I realized I was more sad and disappointed than angry, and I can handle disappointment much better than anger. The thoughts/plans of buying a bottle just drifted away.
Due to numerous serious health issues, we have not had a vacation of more than a day since 2005. Early tomorrow morning, we fly to Puerto Rico, my non-drinking wife, and a couple I have known 25 years who rarely drink more than a single glass of wine; spend one night there and then the next 10 days island hopping on a cruise ship. I will be with my wife and/or my friends 24x7 so not drinking will not be a problem. We'll be so busy every day taking tours, snorkling, etc. No time to waste in a drunken stupor :-) Back late on 4/18.
Anyway, just wanted to pass on that I am out of that nasty short term cycle where I would be "serious", quit for a few days, then buy just that one bottle and that led to the 2nd, 3rd, etc. until I got disgusted with myself and stopped again for a few days, then just robotically started up again, over and over.
Hope everyone here is doing well today, Thank you everyone for your posts, sharing your experiences, and for those who have helped me in the past!
Peace,
..Mike

Congrats! I'm at day 2 and I completely identify with the cycle thing. In the past I've done good for a few days, thought to myself, "See? I can handle this. What's the big deal?" Decided to drink and then ended up right back where I started...buying a bottle every night. I'm hoping I can stick to it this time! Have fun on your vacation!

Thanks for all the good wishes everyone, I really appreciate it! I have been on a short 3 day cruise once in my life and had _Such_ a good time, and the food is SO good and SO endless :-) (I was reading the nightly dinner menu from this exact same cruise but from last year, Angus beef, lobster, stuffed flounder, after I saw the mushroom crusted Colorado rack of lanb, I had to stop reading :-) We also managed to snag the absolute Last "outside" cabin with a huge window. It's so nice because every morning, you wake up and "poof", you've slept in the same bed but you are at a different place to explore. It's just about impossible Not to have a good time; you can be as busy or laid back as you choose to be. Good idea of Dee's to get my act together weeks before this trip, no grogginess, no walking around in a daze, no bloodshot eyes in the morning, and I have a ton more energy everyday since getting all that liquid poision out of my system. I will post a message or two after I get back Monday after next.
Again, thank you everyone for your kind words and words of encouragement, so much appreciated!
