Birthday Night

Hi.

I went to a birthday night tonight.

Do your groups offer birthday or milestone chips to people with less than one year of sobriety?

I went to pick up my 60 day chip. I was told they don't give chips to anyone with less than 1 year.

I felt bummed.

One oldtimer said that:

"You know how they always say the newcomer is the most important person in the room? Well that's not true. It's the people with the most time."

As he said it, he put his hand on my shoulder as he was behind me, and in front of everyone, he said, "you're not" "I am". A good laugh was had by all.

I think he may also have been saying, or indicating how "we all think we are all the most important person in the room"...as well.

I am sure he meant nothing hurtful by it.

I raced to another meeting across town, but was told they don't give chips to you unless it was your "home group".

Anyway...

I started on my fourth step today.

I did column one and had 107 people I am mad at.

Tomorrow I will focus on column two, which is what they did to me, why I am mad. (cause)

Well, good to be here.

I haven't got much time I know. I am happy about having 66 days sober however.

Congratulations on your 60 days

I'm, as most would know, not in AA but I think the achievement is the main thing...the chip - and the public recognition that goes with it - might be nice...but it's the achievement that matters isn't it? ....and only you know how much 60 days means to you.

I've known some SR members to order their own chips over the internet, so that's always an option if you really have your heart set on the keepsake

Here's to the next 60!

D

.......Well done

It all depends on what the group voted on in GC
about what chips if any are given,

My first group in D.C. gave no chips or medallions
to anyone for anything..
In Fl, and here in Ga. they give poker chips of
various colors to denote different milestones to anyone
medallions for home group members for 1 year or more

I'm really pleased you are doing your 4th step
that's the important thing.......solid progress....

very cool.... 60 days an into a 4column inventory..... that's great. I wasn't that quick on the up-take.

In the early days, you got a token at 1 yr, your next at 5, then 10 and 20, 30, 40, etc. While I do think it's important to be recognized for time sober - I personally think it's very important - I hear a LOT of stories about ppl who've got stacks of desire chips, 30 day chips, 60 day chips, and so forth.

........and I think the old timer was just joking around with ya... don't read too much into it. Besides, evvvvvvverybody knows I'M the most important person in AA!!

Congrats on your 60 days! Yeah, each group has its own practice in terms of chips. My Friday night home group does something interesting--we give out poker chips (with an AA sticker in the middle) at 30, 60, 90, three months, and six months to ANYONE in the meeting. At one year or more, we give the bronze medallions to group members only who are celebrating anniversaries. For anyone else celebrating ANY anniversary, we have them come up and be recognized and hand them two marbles out of a cup, and tell them to keep coming back until they have ALL their marbles back!

Ask the old timer if he can write all his pearls of wisdom down for you, you wouldn't want to forget one?! lol

Good to hear you have started step 4, that is the solution that is there for us all to recover from alcoholism...

My home group doesn't give out medals...but NA does...personally i see the point of the medals more for the newcomers than members with multiple years...personally i don't need a weatherman to tell me it is raining and i don't need a medal to tell me i am sober, but that's just me:-)
