Hi all-
I've been sober for over a year - whoop whoop!
It hasn't been easy, but it's worked. AA and SR (and a 4 month stint in outpatient therapy) worked. I'm sober and the obession of drinking has been removed.
I had to change who I was or the same me would drink again.
I had to become willing to new ideas and keep an open mind at all times.
I had to stop fighting, surrender, and accept my alcoholism and with that acceptance comes a lot of responsability.
...and finally, action, action, action. I simply coudn't "outthink" my alcoholism. Constant action had to be taken and lots of it.
It's been painful, awkward, embarressing, and pretty funny at times, but I've also, every so often, just once in a while, caught a feeling of peace, of calmness, of clarity, of true happiness and that has been a wondeful feeling.

Since getting sober, my dad died a slow and painful death from cancer, the IRS came after me, I lost my license for a year, got sentenced for a 2nd dui and 2nd totalled car, my cousin died, my parents (Mom and step dad) got divorced. My point is life still happens and the world continued to spin, but I stayed sober.
We never have to drink again. We can and do recover (no matter what). I'm living proof of that.

Great work my brother. You're such a great inspiration and I love seeing your posts whenever I log in.
We've been through a lot this past year (I'm on 9 months...just behind you). We both got sentenced for our second DUIs (even did our time in the same jail!), my mom and stepdad are divorcing, my mom's going through treatment for breast cancer (diagnosed 3 months before I stopped drinking, but it's dominated the year)...And we've both been through many other things in life that haven't been mentioned here.
I'm very glad that you're around to help when I'm going through those things. Great job on your 1+ year, and I can't wait to celebrate my birthday with you and everyone else here at SR.
