"If, when you honestly want to, you find you cannot quit entirely,
or if when drinking, you have little control over the amount you take,
you are probably alcoholic. If that be the case, you may be
suffering from an illness which only a spiritual experience will
conquer."

I might add spiritual experience or "spiritual awakening" which will conquer this illness. Both pretty much mean the same thing. But if I'm not mistaken, spiritual experience happens suddenly while spiritual awakening happens gradually or slowly.
Or maybe it's possible to experience both. It could happen suddenly and grow even more gradually. Then it could also go away over time if we rest on our laurels. If that's the case, then it might be necessary to re-apply the steps once again.
Sometimes a lift might be required. A lift such as going to an AA convention or doing some type of AA activity in order to re-new the psychic change. Sure, the discipline of prayer and meditation that the alcoholic develops with their higher power is a skill that should be developed. But God also speaks through people.
