It wasn't so bad after all
It wasn't so bad after all
I had an event today that I had been dreading for days. I had to get up in front of a roomfull of people at work for a presentation. Something I hate doing and fortunatley not something I have to do very often. In the past (drinking days) I know I would have got hammered last nite as a way to forget about it, felt like crap this morning/today and had to go up in front of these people (managers, VP's, peers, etc.) a shaking, stammering mess. Well, I didn't drink, slept OK (I admit I did use a prescribed sleep aid), and woke up feeling great. I certainly was anxious before hand, but after I got up in front of the room, I quickly calmed down and actually presented myself quite well! I'm certain that would not have been the case if I had gotten drunk last nite and was hung over today.

Way to go, BBR!
It's anxious enough getting up in front of people never mind alcohol wreaking havoc on our nervous system and the panic that "someone will know..."
Good for you - just one of the many benefits and rewards of recovery.

Your post bought back old memories to me bbr and not good ones.
I also have a fear of speaking in public and have since I was a child.
Fortunately, I do not have to do it ever again as I am retired but my coping mechanism was about the same as yours.
I commend you for making it through this HUGE hurdle. I don't know if I could do it and fortunately do not have to find out.
