Today I quit
Welcome to the site!
Congratulations on beginning to put your desire into action! Stay strong and keep it up!!
It really helped me to go one step at a time. That meant that every second that went by in which I was clean (or sober) was a successful accomplishment. One second, one minute, one hour, one day at a time...you can do it!

Hi Kockroach - I battled it for 25 yrs. and have been sober 16 mos., so I'm living proof it can be done. In the beginning it was very frustrating and scarey to learn to live in a whole new way, that's why SR and the support I found here saved me. Tell us more about yourself.

Today I quit also Kockroach. I also have been battling alcoholism for years. I know just how you feel. Finding sober recovery is a blessing.
Hello to all my old friends here. I've missed you all.

Welcome to SR and congrats on making what will be the best decision you ever made.
I discovered that if I wanted to become a doctor, I had to do what doctors did to become a doctor, just hanging around at a hospital wanting to be doctor worked. Well I discovered the same to be true about sobriety for an alcoholic like I am. If I wanted to get and stay sober I had to do as other recovering alcoholics did.
What I learned was that for this alcoholic and hundreds of thousands of other alcoholics like me, that I could not stay stopped drinking alone with just my will power alone.
What did I do? I found a group of alcoholics who had a track record for staying sober and I did what they did to stay sober and they bent over backwards to show me the way they had stayed sober and they supported me every step of the way.
So what are you planning on doing to stay sober? I found that getting sober even though I had to be medically was easy compared to staying sober.
Staying sober is the hard part! I can remember years before I really quit I would decide I was going to quit drinking, I would not have a drink for 3-4 days or one time even for 1 1/2 years and then decide that I could handle drinking now and start drinking again.
I have learned to listen to suggestions from folks who have time sober, because for many years I always would think "Well I have not drank for a week, or a month, so obviously I know how to stay sober, so what the heck, I can drink one or 2 no problem!"
When I finally realized that I did not know the first thing about staying sober long term and started listening to those with years of sobriety and how they stayed sober did I even begin to be able to stay sober for a while and be happy I was.
The folks with 10, 20, & 30+ years of sobriety told me to stick with the winners, they told me if I wanted to stay sober for a year then to do what people with more then a year sober were doing, if I wanted to stay sober for 5 years then do what folks with more then 5 years were doing to stay sober, etc., etc. They also have taught me to remain teachable, to be open minded, that I can learn from any one whether they have a week sober or 30+ years.
Well those folks were right, I have been sober for 2 1/2 years now, I have done so by doing what those with more time sober then me are doing, I remain teachable and open, I learn form folks with many years sober and those with a week sober.
Some times I learn what not to do, sometimes I learn what to do. I still have a great deal to learn, but I have learned a lot as well, I know I will never graduate and that is just fine.
