Awareness: something might be wrong
Admission: there is definitely something wrong, I might have to do something about it some day.
Acceptance: the poop has hit the fan, I really have this problem and it's time to do something about it. I'm either going to lead a miserable life or die a miserable death.
Surrender: I had a lot of bad things happen to me while I was drinking, that made me a problem drinker. I had every good reason to stop, wanted to stop and couldn't, that made me alcoholic.
Action: The rest of the steps. (There's no going back now.)
Pickles don't ever get to be cucumbers ever again.

There is stuff in the Big Book that is not in the 12X12. Bill did not like to repeat himself.
From the very beginning, the intro's, the Dr's opinion and the first three chapters. Read HE SOLD HIMSELF SHORT pg 258 in the 4th ed to see what the program was like when Bill was writing the Big Book.
