Thumbs up TOPIC: Just Because You Are In Recovery, Why Shouldn't You Have Fun?

Hi Im Sharon an Im An Alcoholic.

By the grace of my HP and people
like you here in SR I havent found
it necessary to pick up a drink of
alcohol since 8-11-90.

For that and you I am truely grateful.

For so long I thought I wasnt allowed
to have fun. I wasnt allowed to enjoy
life and all that it offers. If I laughed
or tried to relax and have fun, I was
scolded. The joy and excitement was
quickly snatched away from me.

So all my life I figured it was wrong
to have fun.

Boy was I wrong.....We r entitled ...I
am entitled to enjoy life and have fun
in life and more so in recovery.

How dare anyone tell me or you
otherwise. Right?

My family use to look at me with
a concerned look when i would
burst out in laughter. Or act
in a child like manner.....just
being a kid in an adult body.

Recapturing my childhood that
was snatch from me at an early age.

The would say, Mom behave urself.
Act ur age....etc. ....Well I was.
Just having fun, and why shouldnt I.
Right?

We all have been through so much
in our lives and only u know for
urself what it is.....For me, enough
holding me down....enough for taking
away my joy....I deserve it TODAY.
No matter how old you are, I am,
we all deserve to be happy and
enjoy all the benifits that life offers
us. And more so now that we r in
recovery. Right?

So.....Don't let anyone take away
your happiness. They dont have
a right to. Keep smiling and keep
having fun no matter what age
u r.

Thanks for letting me share.

I have always tried to find fun in everything.
Laughing is the best medicine. And yes..I believe that with all my heart.

I use to have a hard time finding the good times like when I used.
But they are there more than ever.
Especially with my crazy family.
So the drugs didnt make everything more fun after all.

What a great post aasharon!

I have more fun now being sober than any day drinking and being hungover the morning after, or having to plan out my oxys or smoking weed.

I have fun with my children and pets, fun at my meetings, and fun with my husband, it really is more fun being sober!

Morning Sharon!

I agree with your post on having fun! I was in such a funk the first weeks of sobriety. I was often silly, funny while drinking. I wanted to be silly while sober. I have enjoyed finding humor in everyday things. I invite you to have some silly fun:

If there is no fun, no laughter, where would we be? Absolutely, positively, have to have fun.

A great message Sharon, thanks.

It was kind of opposite for me, my parents didnt keep me from having fun, in fact, they have told me many times over the years that I never seem to have fun or enjoy myself at anything. In a way they are right but maybe sobriety will help me to enjoy stuff a little more.

Me too Felly. Smile a little won't ya? I got that by everyone. I felt like a dope if I went around smiling all the time and I happen to have a mouth that turns down and looks like I'm frowning when I'm not! Ugh!!

Talking

We are not a glum lot!

Recovery teaches me not to be so serious
and not to take myself too seriously.
It's good to laugh.
Laughter heals the soul.

And I dunno if I am alone on this one
but I enjoy watching South Park with my
teenage daughter. Those kids are great.

I enjoy my social events a lot more now that I'm sober. I've been to about five since I quit. It's nice to kick back and relax and not feel that alcohol-induced nervousness I used to have: feeling like I had to talk a lot, say something funny, be fidgity and unable to stay in my seat, feel like I had to make something happen every minute. And of course, say strange things because i was trying to be someone else. It is nice to just be me.
My most recent sober party was last Saturday: a long walk in the woods with a group of great friends, tea and snacks. Then a big dinner. Some people drank wine but I had water because I am sober now and also because I was driving. After so many years of my husband abstaining from alcohol so he could drive me, the drinker, home, it was his turn to drink wine and my turn to drive. I thoroughly enjoyed the day.
