Bipolar and the Elderly
Bipolar and the Elderly
If anyone can direct me to some information for treatment for the elderly with bipolar, I'd appreciated it. I googled but didn't find much. My best friend's mother is 80 and has had bipolar for many years. She's currently in a manic phase and making the whole family nervous.
The doctors keep trying new meds but nothing is working. She was on lithium but it seems to not be working. Or maybe she's not taking it properly. She's gotten very mean and abusive.
Any links or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Love,
Lenina

Try Bipolar II, Mood Swings without Mania; Brain Tours; Stress and Depression; Hormones and Mood; and more... and the link from the NY Times in the stickies above. Both are excellent sources for bipolar information.
I wish you luck. But, her doctor is the best source, I would think, as s/he knows the person and the medication. Do not be afraid to call 911 if necessary for the safty of the patient or anyone else, either.
Shalom!

Thank you, historyteach! She's been hospitalized several times in the last year. She has doctors but the family is beginning to lose trust in them. The family is very close-knit and working hard to make sure she's getting help.
We appreciate the link.
