My Doctor

I called to make an appt. last week only to learn my doc had sold his practice.
I remember the last couple of times I was in that he seemed lethargic and weary.
I learn today that he is on some kind of probation because he became addicted to oxys. He is restricted from writing scripts for narcotics, and is on the edge of losing his license to practice medicine if he does not get straightened out.

It's terrible to hear of such a promising career in such a noble field destroyed by drugs.

It can happen to anyone.

Do those in Society who still visualize an addict as someone who lives in the streets, wears rags and robs to feed their habit have some understanding now that this disease doesn't pick and choose.

It just wants to destroy!

It's my understanding that many ( not all) "addictionologists" are MDs who have lost their former practices due to alcoholism and /or drug addiction.
With sobriety, many end up as consultants for rehabs.

We have 2 facilities in the Atlanta area that were initially built just for recovering medical professionals. When I first went into treatment, I was an RN. The one place I checked out wanted to put me in inpatient rehab for 9 months...said it took a lot longer to "get through" to us medical professionals.

Addiction has no limits. A guy I work with, we are wondering if he is abusing alcohol/drugs because of his behavior. My first thought was "he doesn't LOOK like an addict"...then I remembered, I didn't look like an addict at first, either.

The good news is, for those who really want recovery, the medical profession has several monitoring programs and you don't necessarily have to lose your license.

Hugs and prayers!

Amy

Indeed, the insidious disease of addiction knows no boundaries, knows no social status nor profession. It takes the best of people and strikes them down to the same dark place that knows only pain.

Prayers for your doctor and all who suffer.

Hugs

Indeed, my lawyer died of an oxycontin overdose.
It can, and does, happen to all members of society.
Only those who want to remain in denial continue to believe that addicts are the "bums" on the streets.

G*D bless the addict who still suffers...
and the one in recovery too.

Shalom!

That's how I am reminded it's a disease - just like cancer. It knows no boundaries, no social class, no religion, no love. It's a disease that transcends all of those things.

God bless all of the alcoholics and addicts, those in recovery and those who still suffer, and those of us who love them.
