Finding fun things to do without drugs

Good afternoon,

I just joined these forums and have a question in regards to recovery. I used to smoke pot and quit cold turkey for a year and have the following problem.

When I used to smoke I was happy and spent my time relaxing, watching movies, going to the park, walking and so forth. Now that I've stopped those things don't really seem fun anymore. What's worse is that everything I've tried that I would think would be fun isn't fun.

How does one find out what makes them happy once they've quit smoking?

Think of the guy you want to be and try to become him - learn what you think he should do, become good at the things he does.

That's what I'm trying to do just now and I'm finding fun in some new stuff.

Welcome to SR.....

Find something that will engage your mind.

Learning how to fly a plane
Cook gourmet meals
SCUBA dive....Take a class in music or art.

Action...fun requires action for me.

Well done on your clean time!

I had that problem with weed too way back. Everything seemed so much funner on stoned. More interesting. I still to this day dont know why.
I moved on to harder drugs and found it to be the same way.
I dont have hardly any time in. But I have had some really good times sober since I started looking for recovery.
For me it is all about having fun in almost any situation. I try to laugh at as much as I can. Not in a bad way. Just being a total goof. I am a clown anyway.
It is possible to have fun sober.

I think the long term goal is to be fun, for me thats an ongoing process of recovery and getting to know and like myself and because of that others.

I spend time with people, do meetings, read a lot and spend much time with my HP, ride my bike, go to the gym, play with my dogs, spend time with my daughter, write sometimes, housekeeping, shopping and clothes shopping , come here ...... Life is full but I wondered teh same in early days.

masturbation with a cheese grader?............I swear to god I said that to my mother when she asked me of what my plans were once I got off drugs, I was being a smart ass she was dead serious......find a hobby, if you dont have one try all sorts of things, if your single go out on dates just look around you never know and it will keep you from thinking about it

good luck!

You take an honest look at your life and start doing all the things you had to give up because of drugs.

Can you try and change your mindset and tell it how much better it is doing simple things not stoned?

I have found that I am a completely different person sober, and I like to do different things than I used to.
Turns out, I love to run. Never would've before, unless the cops were chasing me.

Also, I quit doing alot of things I did when I was younger because I was always wasted. Playing tennis, playing music, all kinds of things. Now I really enjoy them, more so than when I was young even.

A book that helped me alot was living sober. It's an AA book, but regardless of your recovery program it's got loads of good stuff in it. It's full of ideas on things to do with your new found freedom and time.
It helped me alot.

I am sorry but that was funny.
I like to run too but cant. I am too slow.
I really love volleyball and riding a beach cruiser.
Things I would not and could not do high.

Why did you quit doing drugs if they made everything so much more fun?

Funny story that. When I first moved up north in 2004 I was told as a condition of employment that I would have to pass a drug test. No big deal, I'd dry out enough so that no THC was in my system, pass the test, find a contact here in the Great Frozen North(TM), game on as usual. The problem was that he never contacted me in regards to the test. It took me about two years to realize that he was doing it as some sort of trick. After that I smoked one more time and since then I simply haven't had the contacts, don't want to risk going out to get more(and the leads dried up as well), and growing more takes more physical space than I have.

The end result is I got sober and have stayed so and here we are now.
