New Year's Eve party
I know you all are going to tell me I'm crazy to go to a NYE party, but I am. Dear friends of ours host a party every year, and I want to see them and ring in the new year. My husband, who has been awesome through all this, isn't going to drink either. It's not the kind of party where alcohol will be the focus- they are very low-key people and so are their friends. But...it'll be there, so I have to be prepared. We are going late, and leaving at 12:01. It'll be a big test, but I don't want to miss out on seeing old friends. My shrink even gave me his cell phone number, but I know I won't need to call.
Deep breath-- wish me luck

Laura, just remain vigilant, talk to your husband if you are feeling uncomfortable and for the love of pete DO NOT LISTEN TO THE VOICE. I am not sure who pete is, but my mother always said that! LOL Have fun and remember at 12:01 you can say you got sober last year!!!

I don't think I could have done that either.
Keep focused on your goal of sobriety and keep a plan handy just in case you get tempted. Use that number if you need it. Always have a plan because you never know when that "thought" will hit and that voice will be whispering in your ear. Don't go unprepared, keep your plan, and you will do alright!
Have fun!

I too will go to our usual New Years Eve party. I am lucky in that alcohol is not the focus. There will be wine but there will not be anyone getting drunk. I will go too. I will just stick to the coffee.

LauraSFO1 and curliQ,
You two are far braver than I! I guess I would have to have a bail out pact with whoever I was with--if it gets too hard we have to leave right away!
Have fun and stay strong!

Laura.
I really dont know how that feels cause i never, ever did drink in a social enviroment and the funny thing is I was not even tempted to drink. There I was mixing drinks for everybody else and it never bothered my one bit. But alone at home, that was my huge problem I was really a "closet drinker" All my friends "knew" I didnt drink.
Best of luck and I'll be thinking of you. Swamijapsa

This is an environment where getting drunk would be a reason to be asked to leave. The wine does not flow and the hosts will not tolerate it. It actually will be easy to deny it. It's the first time I've been there sober in 3 years. Yeah, I'm really good at the game.

Should auld acquaintance be forgot, and never brought to mind?
It's the countdown to 2008...less than 11 hours here on the East Coast of the USA...no need for anyone to feel alone or lonely on this last day of 2007. Get out of yourself, out of the house, into a meeting...whatever it takes to see the New Year in sober!
Good Luck, Laura...after I quit drinking, just about every NYE was spent at AA parties, so I didn't have to fight the urge. But, as a dear old friend of mine always said, "Whatever you think best, as long as you can afford it!"
Happy New Year, All!
