hi
Im not real sure because i've never been an alcoholic but i have been a drug addict and my mother is an alcoholic. I would label someone an alcoholic when it is used for more than just recreational, it affects your life, work, and relationships, If it is done daily and without control, and when youre unable to stop doing it upon request. There are a lot of ways I guess to determine but if you think theres a problem then there probably is and have been enough signs for you to ask that question.
In AA I learned we do not say anyone is an alcoholic, It is up to them to say it.
Someone asks," has your drinking caused you problems? Bad checks, car accidents, wife and or famiy unhappy, etc. If they say, Yes, it has caused problems, then they are told, "then it is a problem."
Here on SR it is fine to use AH ABF etc. I feel it is a short cut rather than saying, My husband drinks too much, too often.
